Our take

If you’re building around Alexa, the Echo Dot Max is the best place to start because it replaces a separate hub. Zigbee, Thread and Matter are all built in, so almost any device on this site pairs straight to it.

What we like

  • Works as a Zigbee, Thread and Matter hub
  • Quick Alexa+ responses
  • Fuller sound than the regular Echo Dot

Watch out for

  • No 3.5 mm audio jack
  • Top buttons are awkward
  • Costs noticeably more than the standard Dot

Skip it if you only want a kitchen timer and weather. The standard Echo Dot does that for less.
