Do you need a hub at all?
Many beginners don’t. Wi-Fi and Matter devices can connect directly to your router and be controlled from your phone. But a speaker or hub becomes essential when you add Thread or Zigbee devices, or want automations that run when your phone isn’t home. If the terms are new, start with what the labels mean.
Best speaker-and-hub for Alexa: Amazon Echo Dot Max
The Echo Dot Max has Zigbee, Thread and Matter radios built in, so it doubles as the hub for almost anything you buy. TechRadar found its sound fuller than the standard Dot’s, though it costs noticeably more. Alexa+ is included with Prime in the US.

Engadget found it louder and bassier than the Nest Mini. The most impressive Gemini features need a Google Home Premium subscription after the included trial.
