The Cam v4 records 2560x1440 video with a 115.8° diagonal field of view.
An IR night mode is joined by a white spotlight that switches on with motion, giving color video at night and a clear warning to anyone at the door. It’s rated IP65, so it can live outside under an eave if you run the power cable to it.
Recording without a subscription
This is where the Cam v4 stands out.
Add a microSD card and it records continuously, around the clock, with no monthly fee. You can scroll back through the timeline in the app.
Wyze’s Cam Plus plan adds cloud-saved clips and smart detection that tells people from cars, pets and packages. It’s useful, but the camera stays genuinely useful without it. Compare that with battery cameras such as the Blink Outdoor 2K+, which need a plan to save clips.
Security and privacy
Wyze has had security incidents in the past, so set it up carefully:
- 1Turn on two-factor authentication in the Wyze app.
- 2Keep automatic firmware updates on.
- 3Use privacy zones to block neighbors’ windows.
- 4Put it on a separate IoT Wi-Fi network if your router supports one.
Who should skip it
Apple Home users, because there’s no HomeKit support.
Anyone who can’t run a power cable to where they want it. And anyone for whom a brand’s security history is a deal-breaker, whatever the price. Our privacy checklist applies to every camera, Wyze or not.
