Why subscriptions matter more than the sticker price
Most camera makers make their money on monthly plans that store clips in the cloud and add smart alerts. That’s not a scam, since cloud storage costs money, but it changes the maths. Over two years, a monthly plan can cost more than the camera itself.
We looked at what each camera does with no plan at all. Prices and plan names change, so we describe what’s free rather than quoting plan prices that go stale.
Best budget camera: Wyze Cam v4
Pop a microSD card in the Cam v4 and it records continuously to the card, with no subscription. The 2.5K picture is excellent for the price, and a motion-triggered spotlight gives color night vision. Cloud clips and person detection need Wyze’s Cam Plus.
Wyze has had security incidents in the past, so turn on two-factor authentication and keep firmware updated. There’s no Apple Home support.

Best lock + doorbell combo: eufy Video Smart Lock E330
The E330 is a keyless deadbolt with a 2K doorbell camera built in, storing video on 8 GB of internal memory. Tom’s Guide named it the best smart lock overall (July 2026). It’s ideal for front doors without doorbell wiring. The camera’s view is narrower than a dedicated doorbell’s, so it can miss packages on the ground.

Google now includes about six hours of event history and smart alerts for people, packages, vehicles and animals with no plan. That’s enough to see who came by this afternoon. Longer history, familiar-face recognition and Gemini summaries need Google Home Premium. It needs existing doorbell wiring.

Skip it if you don’t have doorbell wiring, or you rent and can’t touch it. Look at a battery doorbell or the eufy E330 lock.
Cheapest wire-free camera up front: Blink Outdoor 2K+
Blink’s AA-powered camera goes anywhere without wiring and runs for a long time on batteries. Without a plan you get live view and motion alerts. According to TechRadar and TechTimes, new units ship with the Sync Module Core, which has no USB port, so there’s no free local clip storage. Budget for Blink Basic if you want recordings.
